MS Dhoni After CSK Elimination From Playoff Race: “We Kept Losing Wickets”
News Update April 26, 2025 06:24 AM

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finally moved one spot up in the points table. They did it at the expense of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who now stand practically out of the playoffs race, having managed only four points in nine matches.

This was SRH’s first-ever win over CSK at the Chepauk, and MS Dhoni, the iconic CSK skipper, put the latest loss down to the inability of his batsmen to score even par runs on the surface that he felt was “nothing that was out of the ordinary.”

After being inserted to bat first, CSK managed 154 runs, with Dewald Brevis top-scoring with 42 runs off 25 balls. Apart from Brevis and young Ayush Mhatre, who whacked 30 off 19 at the top, no other CSK batsman could collect boundaries regularly; none of them managed a strike rate of more than 135.

SRH chased down the target in 18.5 overs to collect their third win of the season, push themselves above Rajasthan Royals in the points table, and keep themselves alive in the playoffs race.

We kept losing wickets: MS Dhoni After CSK Elimination From Playoff Race

CSK captain MS Dhoni rued the loss of wickets—CSK were six down by the 14th over—and the lack of runs on the board for their fourth consecutive loss at the Chepauk.

“We kept losing wickets, and in the first innings the wicket was slightly better, and 155 is not a justifiable score, because it wasn’t turning a lot. Yes, after the 8-10th over, it became slightly two-paced when it comes to the fast bowlers, but nothing that was out of the ordinary, I feel we could have put few more runs on the board,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni really chastised his players for “not doing well,” lamenting CSK’s disappointing campaign. The 43-year-old spoke about multiple flaws in his team this season, as he has not gotten the results despite plenty of chopping and changing in the batting department.

MS Dhoni added, “In a tournament like this, if you have one or two areas where you can plug in the holes, it is good, but if the majority of your players are not doing well, it becomes very difficult. Because you have to do a few changes, but if the majority are doing well, then you give those guys that extra few games, and if it doesn’t work out, then you move on to the next one. But if 4 of them are not performing at the same time, you are bound to make that change, because you can’t just keep on going. Because we are not putting enough runs on the board.”

CSK next match is against Punjab Kings on April 30 at home.
