Usually, it is seen that when many fast bowlers come to bowl the first over of the match, after marking the run-up, they bowl the first ball as a warm-up, while some bowlers bowl the first ball so accurately that their chances of taking a wicket increase.
One name among these bowlers is Mohammed Shami, who bowls attackingly against the batsmen from the first ball and forces the batsman to make a mistake on the very first ball. Due to this strength of his, Shami managed to make a unique record in Chennai.
Shami's great record
Mohammed Shami has created history in IPL 2025. He made a unique record in his name by dismissing Sheikh Rashid on the very first ball of the match against CSK. Mohammed Shami has taken a wicket on the first ball of an IPL match four times so far. He has taken a wicket on the first ball of the match once each in 2014, 2022, 2023, and now in 2025. Shami has taken the most number of wickets on the first ball in IPL. On these four occasions, he has dismissed Jacques Kallis (2014), KL Rahul (2022), Phil Salt (2023) and now Sheikh Rashid in IPL 2025.
Two more Indian bowlers
Apart from Shami, many other bowlers have taken wickets on the first ball more than once. New Zealand's legendary bowler Trent Boult has taken a wicket on the first ball of an IPL match twice. Playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2023, he dismissed RCB's Virat Kohli on the very first ball. In 2020, Marcus Stoinis was out on the first ball in front of him. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also done this twice. He dismissed Kusal Perera in 2013 and Prabhsimran Singh in 2023 on the first ball of the match. Umesh Yadav has taken a wicket on the first ball of an IPL match twice on the strength of his lethal bowling. He dismissed Chris Gayle in 2017 and Suryakumar Yadav in 2018 on the first ball of the IPL match. Taking a wicket on the first ball is not easy as for this the bowler needs to warm up completely and bowl 10-12 balls on the side wicket before bowling in the match.
