Even after more than 60 years this actress remains truly incomparable. Having acted in over 500 films across various languages including Malayalam Tamil Telugu and Urdu she rose to become one of the highest-paid actresses of her era. Adding to her legacy she also set a milestone by becoming the only South Indian actress to write and direct a film.
We are talking about none other than Sheela Celine fondly known as Sheela by her fans. Born into a Malayali family she was the daughter of Kanimangalam Antony a railway officer and Gracy. She was first introduced to the world of theatre at the young age of 13 by Tamil actor S.S. Rajendran. At 17 she made her debut in the Tamil movie Paasam (1962). It was MG Ramachandran who added Devi to her name renaming her Sheela Devi. Sheela used this as her screen name for several years before eventually returning to her original name.
However one of the most fascinating highlights of Sheelas film career was her iconic pairing with Malayalam superstar Prem Nazir a collaboration that even earned them Guinness World Record. They hold the record for acting together in the highest number of films an astonishing 130 movies. Sheela also had the unique distinction of working with two prominent South actors who later became Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran and N.T. Rama Rao (NTR).
Also touted as Indias lady superstar Sheela ventured into direction as well as screenplay in 1970s and 1980s. Her notable projects include Shikharangal Yakshaganom Vishnu Vijayam Eeta and Ninaivukale Neengividu.
On the personal front Sheela initially married Mr Xavier a reporter. But after few years the couple got separated. She then tied the knot with actor Ravichandran and gave birth to their only son George Vishnu. Sheela and Ravichandran are now legally divorced. In addition to her illustrious career Sheela is also a passionate and accomplished painter. The actress expressed that paintings bring her immense joy and serves as a form of meditation.
