Despite Tom Cruise’s enormous success in movie blockbusters, actor and director Kenneth Branagh has paid a passionate homage to his longtime friend and co-star by calling him an “underestimated” actor.

In appreciation of his significant contributions to the film business, especially in the UK, Cruise is scheduled to receive the BFI Fellowship, the highest honor bestowed by the British Film Institute (BFI).

The depth that Cruise brings to his roles—which is often buried by his high-octane action star persona—was emphasized by Branagh, who costarred with Cruise in the 2008 war drama Valkyrie, in an interview.

Branagh said, “He’s an underappreciated actor, for whom a golden age of performance beckons,” adding that Cruise’s remarkable resume in movies like “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible” demonstrates his capacity to blend genuine emotional depth with cinematic spectacle, according to Deadline.

Although exciting action roles have dominated Cruise’s on-screen career, Branagh feels that his genuine acting abilities are sometimes disregarded.

Branagh went on to say, “His range is remarkable, and I believe there is more to come,” highlighting the fact that Cruise’s capacity to engage people more deeply is what distinguishes him from other performers in the business.

In addition, Branagh offered an intimate look at Cruise’s attitude off-screen, calling the actor a refreshingly grounded guy.

“He enjoys quiet evenings in traditional British pubs, where he’s respected by locals but doesn’t draw unnecessary attention,” Branagh said. He said, “he finds a quiet corner, enjoys the atmosphere, and is always gracious when he gets spotted.”

A month-long retrospective of Cruise’s films will be held in honor of his BFI Fellowship, which he will earn this year.

Over the course of his more than four-decade career, Cruise has made substantial contributions to the UK film industry, and he expressed thanks for the honor.

“I feel really honored. “I have been producing movies in the UK for more than 40 years, and I have no intention of ceasing,” he said.
