Devastating Incident at Lapu Lapu Festival

Vancouver: A tragic event unfolded in Vancouver, Canada, where an SUV plowed into a crowd during the Lapu Lapu Filipino festival, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and injuring many others, as reported by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) on Monday (Indian time).

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, has been charged with murder following the incident that occurred shortly after 8 PM on Sunday (Indian time) at the festival located at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.

In a statement, the police expressed their condolences, stating, "Eleven people have now died as a result of the mass-casualty event at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival. Our hearts are with all of the victims, their loved ones, and everyone who has been impacted by this act of violence. This is the darkest day in our city’s history."

Interim Police Chief Steve Rai disclosed that the driver has a notable history of interactions with law enforcement and mental health services.

The police confirmed that the suspect has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder. Lo, a resident of Vancouver, has appeared in court and is currently in custody, with further charges expected as the investigation continues.

Authorities noted that some victims from the tragic incident remain unidentified. To assist those affected, the VPD has set up a 24-hour support center at the Douglas Park Community Centre, located at 801 West 22nd Avenue, for anyone trying to reach friends or family.

The VPD is also calling on witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact the Homicide Unit and share their accounts.

Individuals with photos or videos from the incident are encouraged to submit them through an online portal for review by investigators.

The Lapu Lapu Day festival, named after a Filipino leader who resisted Spanish colonization in the 16th century, was officially recognized by the province of British Columbia in 2023 and is widely celebrated by the Filipino community in Vancouver, the region's largest city.
