Obnews International Desk: A powerful earthquake has occurred on the west coast of New Zealand with a intensity of 6.2 on the Richter scale. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was felt after around 1:00 pm on Monday night. Its center was located at a depth of about 10 kilometers above sea level in 300 km south-west of Inwarcargil.
However, monitoring agencies in New Zealand have described the intensity of this earthquake as moderate level. At present, no immediate information has been received from this earthquake. New Zealand, with a population of about 50 million, is located in an area called “Ring of Fire”, which is spread around the Pacific Ocean and where earthquakes and volcanic activities are often seen.
Recently, on 23 April, a strong earthquake was felt in the Middle East area of Türkiye. The German Research Center for Geochetis (GFZ) reported that there has been a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Türkiye. However, no loss of life and property was reported from this earthquake.
On April 19, there was an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude in the border region of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, the tremors of this earthquake were felt till Jammu and Kashmir. The depth of the earthquake was 86 km. The shock was felt at 12:20 Indian time and continued for a few seconds. But no loss of life and property was reported from this earthquake. According to the German Research Center for Geocinese, the effects of the earthquake were felt far and wide due to the high depth.
The main reason for the earthquake is to collide, move or go under each other. The outer surface of the earth is made up of seven major and several small tectonic plates, which are constantly moving. When these plates contact each other, tension arises on their edges or fault lines. When this stress increases excessively, the rocks break their energy and frees their energy, causing an earthquake. In addition, bursting of volcanoes or increasing pressure inside them can also cause earthquakes, called volcanic earthquakes, and it is often felt in a small area.
