Synopsis

India Meteorological Department forecasts above-normal temperatures for most of India in May. However, frequent thunderstorms are expected. These storms will likely prevent temperatures from reaching last year's levels. The number of heatwave days will be higher than normal in several states. Normal to above-normal rainfall is expected across most of the country.

However, forecasts of above-normal rainfall activity and thunderstorms are expected to keep May less warm than last year, said the India Meteorology Department (IMD).

The IMD in its forecast for May said the maximum temperatures are expected to be above normal over most parts of the country, except southern peninsular India. The minimum temperatures are also expected to be above normal in most parts of the country.

The number of heatwave days is likely to be above normal over many parts of the country. Normally the heat wave prevails over northern plains, central India and the adjoining areas of peninsular India for about three days in May.

"During May 2025, above normal heatwave days are likely over many parts of the northwest and central India and adjoining east India," said Mrityunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD.

Many parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and some parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana and north Karnataka are expected to see above-normal heat wave days.

The rainfall average over the country during May is most likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except some parts of Northwest, central and northeast India.
