Meta has introduced a dedicated app for its AI assistant, marking a major step away from its earlier integration within platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. This standalone Meta AI app, available on both mobile and web, promises a more personalised, voice-enabled experience, powered by the company’s latest Llama 4 model.
The new Meta AI app functions much like its competitors ChatGPT and Gemini, allowing users to interact using text prompts or voice. The move gives Meta greater control over user experience and data, enabling more direct engagement outside its traditional social media platforms.
With Llama 4 under the hood, the AI assistant now supports voice interaction—a feature users had long expected on WhatsApp or Instagram. The app allows users to perform tasks like image generation, editing, and information lookup through natural conversations, bringing it on par with leading AI assistants.
Expanded Voice Features and Privacy Controls
The app’s voice capabilities include multiple voice options, similar to Siri or Gemini Live. Meta is also testing a full-duplex mode, which allows seamless back-and-forth dialogue without needing to press buttons. To address privacy concerns, Meta has added a toggle that stops the assistant from speaking or listening unless activated. These voice features are currently available in select regions including the US, Canada, and Australia.
Deeper Integration with Meta Ecosystem
Meta is using its vast platform ecosystem to fuel the assistant’s capabilities. The AI can access user data (with permission) to offer more tailored suggestions, like travel tips or nearby cafes, based on individual preferences. The assistant also links with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses in supported countries, adding a wearable dimension to the AI experience.
The web version of Meta AI is being enhanced with support for large screens and advanced tools, including a new document editor. This tool can generate visual and textual content, or analyse uploaded documents to offer insights—signalling Meta’s ambition to turn its assistant into a productivity hub.
In a bid to encourage wider adoption, Meta is transforming the AI interface into something familiar yet powerful. Features like Discover Feed blend social interaction with intelligent assistance, creating a more engaging user journey. With its new standalone form, Meta AI is positioned to become a central player in the consumer AI race.
