3 Reasons CSK Lost To PBKS IPL 2025: The Punjab Kings defeated the Chennai Super Kings by four wickets with two balls to spare in Match 49 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Wednesday, April 20, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The Chennai Super Kings have become the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025. In the 10 matches they have played so far, they have won only two, against MI and LSG. They have also lost eight games against RCB, RR, DC, PBKS, KKR, MI, SRH, and now PBKS again. With two wins, four points, and the worst net run rate in the league, the Super Kings are at the bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings are competing for a place in the playoffs. Their season started off quite well, beating GT, PBKS, RR, and CSK to kick off IPL 2025. They then lost their first game to SRH, followed by a win against KKR and one over RCB. Then came a loss to RCB and a washed-out match against KKR. With their win over CSK tonight, the Kings now have six wins, one washout, 13 points, and a positive net run rate in 10 matches, putting them second on the points table.

Today, we will look back at three reasons why CSK, who were playing at home with a fresh squad, lost this game.

3) Arshdeep-Jansen Top Order Cleanup

The pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen is growing into one of the best pace duos in IPL 2025. The two men bowl in the powerplay and the death, and they take wickets at those crucial junctures in an inning while keeping the run rate low. The two bowled a combined eight overs today, taking four wickets and conceding 55 runs at an economy of 6.88.

Arshdeep Singh has been Punjab Kings’ ace pacer for a few seasons at this point, during which time he has emerged as one of the most effective T20 bowlers in the world, who can bowl in the death and powerplay. Today, he opened the proceedings with Shaik Rasheed’s wicket in the third over of the match, dismissing the in-form youngster cheaply. He then came to bowl in the last over and dismissed Shivam Dube, stopping him from scoring those last crucial runs that could have been the difference between winning and losing.

Then there was Marco Jansen, who took the second wicket in the powerplay, dismissing the other opener, Ayush Mhatre. His more critical wicket came in the 18th over, when he dismissed the star of CSK’s batting tonight, Sam Curran, for 88 off 47. He not only stopped the Englishman from scoring a 100, but this wicket also prevented Chennai from crossing the 200-run mark.

Afghan pacer Azmatullah Omarzai too took a wicket today, dismissing Dewald Brevis. However, Omarzai was a little costly on the night, giving away 39 runs in four overs.

2) Yuzvendra Chahal Takes First Hat-Trick Of The Season

While this might not be the greatest season in Yuzvendra Chahal’s IPL career, he is showing glimpses of the greatest bowler in this league that he has been in the past today. Not only did he take his second 4-fer of the season, but he also took the first hat-trick of IPL 2025.

Before coming in to bowl the 19th over of the inning, Chahal was having an off night, having conceded 23 runs in his first two overs. When he came in to bowl this over, CSK’s score was 177/5 as the Super Kings looked to cross the 200-run mark. The over didn’t start well; Yuzi first bowled a wide and then conceded a maximum. Then came the second ball of the over.

On the second delivery, Chahal trapped Dhoni, who was caught at long-on. On the third ball, Deepak Hooda took a double, and then the fireworks began. Fourth delivery, Hooda caught at backwards point. Fifth delivery, Anshul Kambhoj gets his stumps knocked over by a brilliant delivery. Finally, on the sixth ball, with Yuzvendra Chahal on a hat-trick, Noor Ahmad lobs the ball high in the air and gets caught—the first hat-trick of the season.

Yuzvendra Chahal took four wickets in a single over and took the legs out of the CSK innings right at the death overs of this Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings match. This was the first IPL hat-trick since 2023.

1) PBKS Top Order Does It Again

Despite several positives from their bowling, the Punjab Kings had a decent score to chase down tonight, which they did on the back of a solid performance by their top order, which is the opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer.

Prabhsimran and Arya have been one of the most dominant opening pairs in IPL 2025. The two attacking batters believe in making a lot of runs in the power play. The two came together to make 44 runs till the fourth over, at which point Priyansh was dismissed for 23 off 15. But this dismissal brought in Shreyas Iyer, who built a great partnership with Prabhsimran.

The opener, who was retained by PBKS ahead of this season, went on to score 54 off 36 at a strike rate of 150. By the time he got out, PBKS was at 116/2 at the end of the 13th over. His innings provided a solid foundation for the rest of the team in this chase. But the best innings for Punjab tonight was played by skipper Iyer, who scored 72 off 41 at a strike rate of over 175.

While Shashank Singh had to play a crucial knock of 23 off 12 in the end to win this match for the Kings, the top three scored 149 runs combined and made the away team the favourites in this Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings match.
