, and are beautiful destinations, and it's no wonder millions of travel there each year. But what's meant to be a can sometimes turn into a scramble for a spot on the . has become a growing issue in recent years, but according to one travel expert, there are "remarkable" alternatives for those looking for a quieter getaway.

Andrew Harrison-Chinn, the CMO of travel platform , told the Express: "Destinations like , , and have long been favourites, but their popularity has led to , diminishing the tranquil experiences many travellers seek."

With that in mind, he said travellers who want to escape the crowds and experience something more authentic should consider a few lesser-known spots.

"In Europe, consider the Azores in Portugal, where dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush greenery, and peaceful hiking trails offer a serene retreat away from the usual tourist hubs," he said.

He added: "Similarly, Clisson in France charms visitors with its Italian-inspired architecture, Roman arches, and vibrant cultural scenes, all nestled within a picturesque riverside setting."

For something completely different, he suggested the Bokodi Floating Village in Hungary, calling it "a surreal experience".

Andrew continued: "The houses built on stilts across a tranquil lake, create an unforgettable and peaceful escape."

Further afield, the expert claimed there are even more hidden gems.

"Lake Malawi stands out as a true hidden gem," he said. "Often overlooked, this vast freshwater lake boasts crystal-clear waters, colourful marine life, and vibrant local culture."

And for those looking for a mix of luxury and authenticity, he recommended the Seychelles.

Andrew said: "The Seychelles offers a stunning option - from staying at Raffles on Praslin to cycling through vanilla plantations from a charming B&B on La Digue."

He added: "Another exceptional option is Simien Mountains National Park in Ethiopia, where dramatic highland landscapes and rare wildlife deliver an unparalleled adventure for those willing to venture off the beaten path."

Andrew stressed that with more people embracing "slow travel", these types of destinations offer a more meaningful and enriching experience, but he also offered a word of caution.

"It's important to plan ahead," he said. "Infrastructure may be more limited, and accessibility can vary, so thorough research and preparation are key to ensuring a smooth and fulfilling travel experience."
