The American University in Dubai (AUD) emerged as the standout performer as the inaugural University Games came to an energetic close, bringing together more than 1,800 students from 28 universities across the UAE in a celebration of sport, talent, and teamwork.

Hosted in a lively atmosphere at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium and Mubadala Dome, the event marked a major milestone in collegiate sports — and according to Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, it’s just the beginning.

“This success reflects our vision to make sport a key part of student life,” he said. We will continue working with various sports organisations in order to support young athletes and build upon this event as a crucial base for advancing community sports in higher education institutions.

“In addition to academics, we hope to provide a professional pathway for individuals with the aptitude and potential to compete and win championships.”

The American University in Dubai (AUD) clinched three major titles — men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball. In the basketball finals, AUD overcame the University of Sharjah and the University of Rochester, who placed second and third respectively in the men's competition, while the women’s team triumphed over the American University of Sharjah, with the University of Sharjah again securing third.

AUD’s dominance continued on the volleyball court, securing the women's title ahead of New York University and the University of Rochester.

Meanwhile, the University of Sharjah made its mark with double gold, winning both the men’s football and volleyball championships. They defeated the American University in the Emirates and the American University in Dubai in their respective finals, with third place going to the American University of Sharjah (football) and the University of Dubai (volleyball).

In women’s football, the Higher Colleges of Technology emerged champions, followed by the American University of Sharjah in second and New York University in third.

The Games concluded with vibrant medal ceremonies celebrating a landmark moment for university sport in the UAE.

At the closing ceremony, Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Executive Director of the Sports Development Sector at the General Authority of Sports, praised the athletes and universities, calling the Games “a pivotal step in discovering talent and building the future of UAE sports.”

An awards ceremony at Emirates Palace on May 4 will cap off the season, recognizing the winning teams and standout athletes. With growing momentum and new partnerships, the University Games are set to become a cornerstone of UAE’s sporting future.
