IPL 2025 suspended: Who will claim the trophy?
ET Online May 09, 2025 07:00 PM
Synopsis

Following a terrorist attack and escalating tensions with Pakistan, IPL 2025 has been suspended indefinitely. The BCCI has not confirmed how the trophy will be awarded, but the defending champions from IPL 2024 may retain their title. Relocating the tournament to Dubai is not feasible due to scheduling conflicts with the Pakistan Super League.

In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Indian Armed Forces initiated Operation Sindoor to neutralise those responsible. Pakistan retaliated with missile and drone assaults last night, significantly intensifying tensions between the two countries. Amid growing security concerns, IPL 2025 has been suspended indefinitely until the situation stabilises.

Who will get the IPL trophy?
If IPL 2025 is not resumed, the BCCI has not yet confirmed how the trophy will be awarded—or if it will be awarded at all. Traditionally, in cases where a tournament is suspended mid-season, no team is declared the winner unless a significant portion of the matches have been played and clear standings exist. Unless the board issues a specific directive, the defending champions from IPL 2024 will retain their title by default, but they won't be officially declared winners of the 2025 season

IPL unlikely to be resumed.
Unlike in 2014 and 2020, when the IPL was successfully hosted outside India due to special circumstances—South Africa in 2014 during the Lok Sabha elections and the UAE in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic—this time, shifting IPL 2025 to Dubai isn’t feasible. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is already scheduled during this period, and with venue clashes and logistical constraints, Dubai is not a viable alternative for hosting the remainder of the tournament.

Current table standings for every team
As of the latest IPL 2025 standings, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are leading the table with 8 wins each, though Gujarat holds the top spot due to a better net run rate. Punjab Kings follow closely with 7 wins from 10 games, while Mumbai Indians sit in fourth with 7 wins from 12 matches. Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders remain in the playoff race, with 6 and 5 wins respectively. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants are also tied with KKR at 5 wins. At the lower end of the table, Sunrisers Hyderabad have managed just 3 wins, and both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings are struggling with only 3 wins each from 12 matches, making their qualification chances slim.
