Security Issues Prompt Match Cancellation
In Dharmshala, players from the Delhi Capitals maintained a calm demeanor despite ongoing security challenges. The match against Punjab Kings was abruptly halted on Thursday due to escalating tensions at the India-Pakistan border. Following this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) arranged an emergency Vande Bharat Express train to ensure the safe departure of players and staff from the picturesque hill station.
The cancellation occurred after a drone strike attempt in Jammu, located approximately 200 kilometers from Dharmshala. By Thursday evening, both players and fans were safely escorted out of the area.
On Friday, the Delhi Capitals players took a short break from cricket. Several stars, including KL Rahul, paused for selfies with fans while relaxing by a small stream. The team seemed to embrace the tranquility of the surroundings, momentarily free from stress. Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs were also spotted enjoying the serene landscapes of Himachal Pradesh.
Later, players from both the Delhi and Punjab teams boarded the Vande Bharat Express from a nearby station. The BCCI coordinated with the Railway Ministry to facilitate the players' safe exit, as air travel was suspended due to security threats. Alongside the players, commentators, support staff, cameramen, and other crew members also left the venue.
In light of the escalating India-Pakistan conflict, the BCCI convened an emergency meeting and decided to suspend the tournament for at least a week. All franchises were instructed to disperse immediately, with the final decision regarding the tournament's resumption pending further evaluation.
This decision came after safety concerns were raised by cricket boards from England, Australia, the West Indies, and South Africa. The BCCI has been diligent in managing logistics and ensuring that travel protocols for all teams are adhered to. Notably, CSK players Ravindra Jadeja and Urvil Patel have already returned home.
