It is unclear whether the pair drowned or died from their initial injuries.

Jose Antonio Gutierrez Sampedro, a local commentator, claimed the driver of the fatal crash may have suffered a medical emergency.

He said: "It seems the couple were 78 and 58 years old. Maybe the driver suffered a medical emergency. Such a sad way to lose your life."

Emergency workers had to fight their way through the mangled wreckage to reach the pair. Firefighters spent more than six hours trying to free the dead couple.

The day before the crash the couple had arrivd in nearby Leon. On the day of the tragic incident the Brits had been driving on the N-621 roads - one of Spain's National Highways famous for its spectacular views.
