Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that senior Indian batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would participate in the 2027 World Cup despite having retired from Test cricket to extend their ODI careers.
After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, Rohit and Virat retired from playing the shortest format and will henceforth only play in One-Day Internationals.
With three double hundreds, Rohit is among the best hitters in the 50-over format, while Kohli has amassed 51 ODI hundreds. They are both quite skilled in the format.
However, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar does not believe that Rohit and Virat would be able to participate in the 2027 World Cup.
It all depends on how much the selectors believe they can add to the team, according to Gavaskar.
“They have performed really well in this game type. Once again, the 2027 World Cup is likely to be considered by the selection committee. They will be considering their chances of making the 2027 World Cup squad. “Will they be able to continue contributing in the same manner as before?” That’s what the selecting committee will be thinking. Both of them will be present if the selection committee determines that “yes, they can,” Gavaskar said in a conversation with Sports Today.
Both Rohit and Kohli would not be included in the team given their present form, according to Gavaskar. “No, they probably won’t be performing. I’m being completely truthful. Even God won’t be able to drop them in the next year or two if they find a deep vein of form and continue to score hundreds and hundreds,” Gavaskar added.
Rohit will also need to address his fitness concerns, which have led to the Mumbai Indians utilizing him as an impact replacement for the majority of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to his recent poor play.
Even if Kohli’s health remains unaffected and he seems to be playing well in the IPL (505 runs in 11 games), his ODI form has been lacking since the 2023 World Cup in India. He has stated his intention to compete in the 2027 World Cup, although it is unclear how he will stay match-fit given his limited playing time.
