Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, emphasized on Tuesday that the opposition should refrain from hasty reactions and not politically penalize the Narendra Modi administration for seeking peaceful solutions. The leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) remarked that those who criticize ceasefire agreements from air-conditioned studios should spend time at the border with their families to truly grasp the daily realities of death and destruction.
Mufti appealed to all opposition parties to avoid thoughtless criticism or the tendency to gain political advantage. She stated that the Modi government should not be politically punished for adopting peaceful methods. This is not a time for division but rather for bipartisan politics. The PDP leader noted that just as the incident in Pahalgam unified voices from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, there is a need for national consensus to support the peace process that protects national interests.
Mufti stated, "Leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh demonstrated that dialogue across borders is possible even in tense times without compromising security or sovereignty." She urged the opposition to rise above politics and support genuine efforts for peace and stability. The PDP leader, who served as Chief Minister during the PDP-BJP coalition government from 2016 to 2018, remarked that it is now crucial for India to become aware of the toxic narratives promoted by television channels, which dangerously divert the nation's attention from its real challenges and priorities.
