Released in 1993 Khal Nayak starring Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit emerged as one of the years biggest blockbusters. However it was the song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai that stirred up the controversy across the country for being too obscene. The track drew criticism from certain organisations and was reportedly banned on radio and television broadcasts.
Featuring 90s Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai became an instant hit upon its release. However the song faced backlash with around 32 parties and organisations openly criticising the song for its bold lyrics. Despite being banned by All India Radio and Doordarshan the song shattered records and reportedly sold over 1 crore cassettes in its very first week becoming one of the highest sales weeks for an album at the time.
The video showcased Madhuri Dixit performing a sensuous dance to the powerful vocals of Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun. Her moves were so impactful that she was playfully accused of breaking countless hearts. The song was choreographed by the legendary late choreographer Saroj Khan. The lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi while the music was composed by the renowned duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Directed by Subhash Ghai Khal Nayak turned out to be a superhit and made Madhuri Dixit an overnight sensation. The cast of the film includes Sanjay Dutt Jackie Shroff Anupam Kher Rakhee Gulzar and more. Bankrolled by Subhash Ghai under the banner of Mukta Arts Ltd Khal Nayak became the biggest hit of 1993 and surpassed Govinda starrer Aankhen. The film was a critical as well as a commercial hit garnering widespread acclaim for its narrative direction and cast performance.
