According to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) official website, Pubudu Dassanayake, a former international for Canada and Sri Lanka, has been named the new head coach of the USA men’s team.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Pubudu Dassanayake, a former cricket player for Canada and Sri Lanka, has been named the new head coach of the USA men’s cricket team.
He took over as head coach in place of Stuart Law. Following the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was played in the USA and the West Indies, Law, a former Australian cricket player, resigned from his role.
After leading the USA from 2016 to 2019, Pubudu Dassanayake will start his second term as head coach.
The 54-year-old previously assisted the American squad in gaining One-Day International classification and making a reputation for themselves in the cricket community.
Since then, Dassanayake has served as head coach of both Nepal and Canada. He also assisted the latter in their first-ever participation in the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies last year.
Dassanayake is eager to manage the team in another international competition and expand on the foundation he helped create ten years ago, especially because the USA has already qualified for the T20 World Cup in India next year.
Dassanayake said, “It’s an honor to return and lead the USA Men’s National Team,” according to the ICC’s official website.
“I’m proud of what we accomplished during my previous time here, and I see tremendous potential in this group to reach even greater heights,” he said.
“I look forward to working closely with the players and staff to continue building something meaningful for USA Cricket,” he said.
Before relocating to Canada towards the end of his career, Pubudu Dassanayake played in 11 Test matches and 16 ODIs for Sri Lanka. The former right-handed batsman managed to score only 196 runs in the 11 longest format matches. Pubudu finished his ODI career with 16 ODIs and 85 runs.
