After undergoing emergency surgery for an abdominal injury he received during Sunday’s game against Leicester City, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is no longer in an induced coma.
Following further examinations by the Forest medical staff, the 27-year-old was sent to the hospital on Monday following his injury sustained when he crashed with a goalpost during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League tie against Leicester.
In order to monitor his progress throughout the treatment, the forward spent Tuesday in an induced coma after undergoing the initial stage of the surgery on Monday. According to the BBC, Awoniyi had the second phase of the procedure on Wednesday, which included dressing the wound.
Nottingham Forest said on Tuesday that Awoniyi is doing well after undergoing emergency surgery.
Five minutes before, Awoniyi had just been brought in as a replacement when he crashed into a post while trying to score the game-winning goal.
The sideline referee didn’t raise their flag until after Awoniyi had hit the post, even though it turned out that Elanga had been offside. After a protracted therapy, Awoniyi had attempted to continue playing even though she was obviously uncomfortable.
Following the game, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis took the field to voice his displeasure with Espirito Santo on the way Awoniyi’s injury was handled. This led to a contentious debate between Marinakis and manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the field.
Nottingham Forest, however, called the rumors of a dispute with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo “fake news” in their statement.
In actuality, neither on the field nor inside the stadium was there any altercation with Nuno or anyone else. We were all frustrated because the athlete should never have been permitted to continue by the medical staff.
Given this, we urge past coaches, athletes, and other prominent personalities in the sport to avoid making snap decisions and spreading false information online, particularly when they lack complete information.
“No one benefits, least of all the wounded athlete, from baseless and ignorant fury motivated by personal social media traction. We urge these powerful voices to treat player welfare with the same deference that they often expect from others. It stated in a statement on Tuesday, “Let concern come before commentary.”
