Back in the days when the worth of a child was known by gender an actress was born only to be not wanted by the person who brought her into this world. This childs father wanted a son and wasnt happy that he was blessed with a daughter. She was left in an orphanage just hours after her birth; however later her parents got her back home reluctantly. This actresss life struggle started before she even started living but fate had other plans. This actress grew up to become the finest and most iconic actress of Indian cinema. She was none other than Meena Kumari. Compelled to act due to poverty and bad financial condition of the family Meena Kumari started acting at a very young age and became a child artist. She made her debut with Bachchon Ka Khel in 1946 and later she delivered many hit films. Besides being an actor she was also a poet playback singer and costume designer. She frequently portrayed roles of melancholic and emotionally complex characters. She was also popularly known for her ability to depict nuanced emotions and often played women marginalized by society or victims of fate which also resonated with her personal life which was full of complexes turmoil and alcoholism. Because of this she also earned the title of tragedy queen Working in films for almost 30 years she tied the knot in 1952 with famous director Kamal Amrohi which was the beginning of another turmoil in her life. According to reports Kamal really controlled Meena Kumari and had put many conditions to marry her. Madly in love Meena had accepted his conditions with a smile. Kamals conditions were not to sign a film with another director not to wear revealing clothes to reach home before 6 pm and no man to be allowed in the makeup room. Lost in love Meena Kumari accepted these conditions with a wide smile; however how would she manage it as a heroine and what would be the repercussions even she didnt think it through? Even though Kamal loved Meena Kumari immensely he would always torture her. After marriage Meena Kumaris life had completely changed. She could neither cry nor laugh openly. Because of their turbulent relationship her dream of becoming a mother was shattered not once but thrice. And thats why she couldnt become a mother. Later in 1964 due to a fight between them they separated. She couldnt take this trauma and later she resorted to abuse of alcohol which badly affected her liver. This really deteriorated her health even after getting treatment in countries like London and Switzerland Just weeks after the release of Meena Kumaris blockbuster film Pakeezah she passed away. At just 38 Meena Kumari left the world leaving the entire Indian cinema shocked.
