The controversy occurred on the sets of Chingaari when Mithun Chakraborty got carried away while filming an intimate scene with Sush leading to palpable friction between the two. Rumours surfaced that Sushmita walked away crying after Mithun touched her inappropriately. She also reported the problem to director Kalpana G. Lajmi who assured her that it was just a misunderstanding.

Anuj eventually apologised Sushmita for his behaviour which director acknowledged his mistake publicly. While she felt why Sushmita felt bad about Anuj remarks she admitted felling disappointed as the director and how the whole film was being publicised. In an interview with Hindustan Times Kalpana shared I dont think that a film like Chingari should be publicised in such a manner. I felt extremely hurt when Anuj gave importance to the kiss sequence rather than the whole message behind the film.
Controversises aside when Sushmita was asked about her experience of portraying Basanti in Chingaari she said it was emotionally taxing. In a conversation with Hindustan Times the actress said that playing a sex worker took a toll on her psyche leaving her feeling uneasy and emotionally drained.
