I've travelled the world - there is 1 item that always makes it into my hand luggage

The summer holidays are just around the corner, and as you plan your travels, it can be incredibly easy to overlook packing your carefully. I love , but one of the biggest mistakes I have made countless times is leaving packing my carry-on to the last minute and then tossing a few things in a bag when I am heading out.

I have then regretted being so careless once I am on my flight or train, as my journey will be much more uncomfortable because I forgot to pack something essential. One of the handiest things I often forget to pack is a fabric tote bag, as it has so many uses while you are .

Why should you always travel with a tote bag?

It may seem simple, but if you are paranoid about forgetting documents when you are rushing to the airport or train station, a tote bag can be a game-changer.

I put anything important like my tickets, passport, phone and wallet in a tote bag at the top of my hand luggage so it is always easy to reach.

This means I can save time, as I do not need to dig through my carry-on or open a suitcase. I also find it makes me less stressed, as I can easily check that I have everything at any time.

It does not take up much space, and once you have arrived at your destination, it is perfect to use as a beach bag or for shopping, so you do not need to spend extra money on a plastic bag.

Plus, once you are heading home, you can use your tote bag to carry any souvenirs or extra items you do not want to lug around, like a jacket, which also makes travelling easier.

I bought a fabric tote bag from Waterstones that I have used for years, as I love reading. However, the ones from bookshops can be a little pricey. You can also buy foldable tote bags at many clothes shops like Primark, online on Amazon, or even at cosmetic stores like Lush or The Body Shop.

What other overlooked items do I pack in my hand luggage?

I always make sure to have a book or a non-electronic source of entertainment with me, as I can find myself worrying about my phone running out of battery, which will make finding my hotel more stressful by the time I arrive.

Not only does a book give me a welcome break, but it also does not take up much room and is a great way to relax during the journey.

I also carry a little cheap fan with me, as being packed into a plane or train compartment with lots of people can quickly become hot and uncomfortable. I bought mine at Flying Tiger, and it needs to be charged once before I leave home, but then it will last me my whole holiday.

I really enjoy writing, so I always make sure to have a pen and notebook with me. However, I have found this incredibly useful, as it helps me jot down Wi-Fi passwords, seat numbers, or even directions, so I do not need to totally rely on the internet to get me where I need to go.

One more important item I pack that people often overlook is fresh socks. Aeroplanes tend to get very warm, so you can feel sweaty and unpleasant even if you are sitting for hours.

Changing your socks makes you feel a little fresher and cosier, so you can enjoy travelling without feeling frustrated or uncomfortable because you took the time to plan ahead.
