Renowned Pakistani figures, including politician Sharmila Faruqui and actress Zhalay Sarhadi, have strongly reacted to Indian poet and writer Javed Akhtar’s recent anti-Pakistan statement, calling it hateful and irresponsible.
Known for his controversial and provocative remarks, Javed Akhtar recently sparked outrage in Pakistan after a video went viral on social media. During a book launch event, Akhtar said, “I am criticized from both sides. One side calls me a ‘kafir’ and says I deserve hell, while the other side calls me a ‘jihadi’ and says I should go to Pakistan. If I had to choose between Pakistan and Hell, I would rather go to Hell.” His comment received applause from the audience present at the event but drew severe backlash online.
The clip, shared on Instagram by Galaxy Lollywood, quickly went viral, amassing thousands of comments condemning Akhtar. Many users wrote that his words prove he is indeed deserving of Hell. In Pakistan, his remarks were met with fierce criticism from both the public and social media users.
Sharmila Faruqui and Zhalay Sarhadi condemned Akhtar’s statement, saying such hateful rhetoric only fuels animosity between the two nations. They emphasized that public figures must be mindful of the impact their words carry, especially on sensitive topics involving international relations.
Actress Mishi Khan, meanwhile, criticized Pakistani artists who previously welcomed Akhtar, sarcastically suggesting that he should “take along those who once sat at his feet in Pakistan” before he leaves.
Actor Imran Abbas also expressed his disappointment, stating, “We gave him first-class treatment, but he clearly didn’t deserve it.”
The backlash reflects a broader public sentiment in Pakistan that prominent voices like Javed Akhtar’s should be more responsible and refrain from making divisive statements that damage efforts toward peace and understanding.
