A tsunami warning was also issued by European authorities in response to the earthquake. Initial estimations indicate that the earthquake was 60 km deep and occurred at 6.19 a.m., 58 km northeast of Elounda in northern Crete.

Although there have reportedly been no reports of damage or casualties, the people were shaken by the earthquake that was felt across Crete and the neighboring islands.

Several aftershocks reportedly followed, and Crete’s fire department has been placed on notice.

Efthimios Lekkas, head of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, told national television ERT that the earthquake’s epicenter was probably in the sea.

Greece is one of the most seismically active areas of Europe, located along a complicated fault border between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, and it often suffers seismic activity.

Following a series of earthquakes that rocked the area over the weekend, officials in one portion of Greece’s Evia Island suspended schools earlier Monday as a precaution.

The National Observatory of Athens reports that since Sunday, at least three earthquakes with Richter scale magnitudes between 4.1 and 4.5 have been recorded, with many aftershocks following. The epicenter was close to the town of Prokopi in central Evia.

The Greek capital, Athens, some 80 kilometers to the south, felt the largest earthquake, a 4.5-magnitude jolt in the early hours of Monday, according to the Xinhua news agency.

At least twenty homes, businesses, and a monastery were destroyed by the earthquakes, according to Giorgos Tsapourniotis, mayor of the Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna municipality.

Greece was rocked by another earthquake on May 13 with a magnitude of 6.1, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
