Citing the youthful group of players chosen for the series that begins on June 20 at Headingley, veteran top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara feels that the next five-match Test tour of England is a significant turning moment for Indian cricket.
Following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India has a new vice-captain in Rishabh Pant and a new captain in Shubman Gill as the young team prepares to enter a new era of playing Test cricket. In the past, India has only triumphed in three of 19 series against England; the latest victory was in 2007, when Rahul Dravid captained the team.
“A team’s perseverance and flexibility have always been tested in the India-England Test series. India has only won three of the 19 series that have been played on English soil in the last century, which shows how difficult this match has been for us.
“With a youthful and vibrant team, this trip marks a major shift for Indian cricket. I’m excited to see how this group steps up and establishes new standards for the next generations,” Pujara remarked. The remaining matches of the India-England Test series will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. A new ICC World Test Championship cycle for India also begins with the series against England, captained by Ben Stokes.
Former India left-arm fast-bowling all-rounder Irfan Pathan has encouraged Gill’s team to defeat the formidable opponents they would face during the England trip. Pathan, whose campaign slogan for the Test series is “Naya India, Dhaakad India,” will be included as a panelist for the broadcasters’ coverage. In England, test cricket is the pinnacle of evaluating a player’s ability, disposition, and character. In addition to continuing a tradition, Team India is authoring a new chapter in our cricketing history with the emergence of a new generation.
