There were questions when Tushar Deshpande was included in the India “A” team for the red-ball series against the England Lions, which begins in Canterbury on May 30. Deshpande’s selection was unexpected since Ranji Trophy achievements have always affected “A” squad choices.

Given that Deshpande missed the whole previous domestic season owing to an ankle injury that needed surgery soon after making his India debut on the T20I tour of Zimbabwe in July 2024, the surprise is understandable.

Insiders in the know claim that Deshpande was selected for the India “A” team in Canterbury because of his quick pace and ability to take wickets, which were demonstrated when he claimed 15 wickets in Mumbai’s 2023–24 Ranji Trophy victory, as well as the national setup’s desire to have a varied pool of fast bowlers.

“I believe there hasn’t been much activity since Tushar returned. Despite missing the full season, he has performed well in his IPL appearances. Despite his injuries from the previous season, it’s encouraging that the selectors have trust in him,” IANS cited former India fast bowler Dhawal Kulkarni as saying.

However, he has done well in the IPL games that he has participated in. Therefore, it is crucial that he perform well on the England visit. Given his IPL return, I’m sure he’ll do well,” he said.

Deshpande returned to playing competitive cricket in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Kulkarni, Mumbai’s bowling consultant during the most recent domestic season, believes he would succeed in England, where the circumstances will be favorable for his abilities with the Duke’s ball, despite the fact that he only claimed nine wickets in ten games at an economy rate of 10.63.

“In terms of talent, he swings the ball and bowls at a respectable rate. He has the set of abilities needed for red-ball cricket. He will benefit from bowling with the Dukes ball, which swings more than the Kookaburra or SG ball. Additionally, he will benefit from favorable circumstances in England. Thus, I believe Tushar’s trip will be successful,” he said.

After making his first-class debut in 2016, Deshpande established himself as a mainstay in the Mumbai lineup by the 2018–19 campaign. Kulkarni, who represented India in 12 ODIs and two T20Is, has watched Deshpande’s development carefully and thinks his desire to play local matches has aided in his maturation.

He has developed as a bowler and cricket player with experience. Experience cannot be replaced. You must play domestic cricket to get experience if you want to compete at the top level. One factor in Tushar Deshpande’s success has been his constant desire to play domestic cricket.

Over the years, Mumbai has depended on him for consistency and speed. By continuously considering his bowling and conditioning, he has developed as a bowler. He has been disciplined lately, and the effects are clear,” he said.
