The Ecuadorian football association announced on Friday that despite injury concerns, attackers Enner Valencia and Gonzalo Plata, who are based in Quito, Ecuador, have been selected for Ecuador’s World Cup qualifying matches against Brazil and Peru.
According to Xinhua, Valencia of Internacional has missed the Porto Alegre team’s last six games because of a hamstring strain, while Plata of Flamengo has been out since April because of a knee ailment.
According to Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece, “they are in a complicated situation but they are currently in the process of recovering,” he told reporters.
Leonardo Campana and Angelo Preciado, who were injured and missed Ecuador’s most recent doubleheader of qualifications in March, were called up by the Argentine coach.
The 28-man roster naturally includes defender Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen, center-back Willian Pacho of Paris Saint-Germain, and left-back Pervis Estupinan of Brighton.
Ecuador will encounter Peru in Lima five days later and Brazil in Guayaquil on June 5.
With four qualifiers left, Beccacece’s squad is now ranked second in the 10-team South American group. While the seventh-ranked team will contest a playoff spot, the top six teams will automatically go to the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada the following year.
