Mumbai: A woman residing in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area fell victim to a social media scam after befriending an unknown man on Facebook, who gained her trust and allegedly defrauded her of ₹3.40 lakh under the false promise of marriage.

Based on the victim’s complaint, Byculla Police have registered a case against the accused, identified as Sahil Jaggal, and initiated an investigation.

According to police sources, the woman and the accused came into contact about three months ago through Facebook. The man introduced himself as a resident of Haryana and claimed to be running a hotel business in France. He frequently uploaded videos on his Facebook profile, which the woman liked—eventually leading to private conversations between the two.

Their interaction soon progressed to exchanging mobile numbers and frequent communication. On April 13, 2025, the accused claimed that his ATM card had been blocked and asked for ₹10,000, which the woman transferred. Over time, under the pretext of marriage and various false excuses, the accused convinced the woman to transfer a total of ₹3.40 lakh to different bank accounts.

After receiving the money, the accused abruptly cut off all communication and blocked the woman on social media and by phone. Realizing she had been duped, the woman approached Byculla Police, who registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS for cheating and criminal breach of trust. Further investigation is underway to trace and apprehend the accused.
