Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first IPL championship win in Ahmedabad, a tragic event unfolded during the victory parade outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. A staggering crowd of nearly 200,000 fans gathered to celebrate, but the lack of adequate crowd management led to a catastrophic stampede, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuring over 30 others.
In light of this tragedy, RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) released a joint statement expressing their sorrow and announcing financial assistance for the victims' families.
"RCB - KSCA expresses deep concern and heartfelt condolences regarding the unfortunate incident that occurred during the celebration organised by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier today. We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by individuals during this event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this incident. We sincerely regret this tragedy and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this extremely difficult time."
The statement further detailed that both RCB and KSCA would provide INR 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. They clarified that this gesture is not meant as compensation for the loss of life but rather as a small token of support during an unimaginably difficult time.
"We want to emphasize that this compensation is not intended to determine or replace the value of human life, but rather to serve as a gesture of support and solidarity during such challenging times."
Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also shared his thoughts on social media, expressing his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. He stated, "What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all."
Tendulkar's heartfelt message resonated with many across India's cricket community and political landscape, all mourning the loss of life during what was meant to be a joyous occasion.
