G-7 Summit: The newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta on 15-17 June 2025. On this occasion, PM Modi congratulated Carney on the recent election victory and committed to work towards strong bilateral relations between the two countries. This step is being considered a positive sign towards improving tension between India and Canada which deteriorated during the tenure of former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the social media platform X on 6 June 2025, ‘It was a pleasure to talk to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the phone. He congratulated him on his victory in the recent election and thanked him for inviting him to the G7 summit to be held in Kananaskis later this month. He also said that India and Canada which are associated with lively democracy and deep people’s relations. Will work closely with new energy based on mutual respect and shared interests. The G7 Summit, including Canada, America, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Global is an important platform for discussion on economic and geopolitical issues. India has been invited as a guest country at the G7 summit since 2019, which shows its growing global economic and diplomatic role.
The relations between India and Canada reached the historic low in 2023 at that time. When the then Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused the involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected these allegations as ‘baseless’ and ‘inspired’. Diplomatic tension between the two countries increased after Nijjar’s murder in the British Columbia in June 2023. In which India had called back its High Commissioner and expelled six Canadian diplomats. There was a brief meeting between Justin Trudeau and PM Modi during the G7 Summit in Italy in 2024 but the meeting was tense. Trudeau said at that time that he is committed to working on important issues with India. But there was no concrete progress.
Mark Carney, who has been the first Governor of Bank of Canada and Bank of England. Which took over as the PM of Canada in April 2025. In which economic support and shared priorities were discussed. Carney’s government believes that strengthening trade and diplomatic relations with India is important for Canada’s economic interests. Especially when the business policies of US President Donald Trump have pressurized Canada’s economy.

However, in the April 2025 election, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party formed a minority government by defeating the Conservative Party of Poivrere. Poilivre had termed Trudeau’s allegations of foreign intervention as ‘lies’ and has taken a neutral stand on Canada-India relations. PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit can be an important step towards normalizing relations between India and Canada. Experts believe that Carney’s technical and global approach can be beneficial for both countries. India and Canada have immense potential for cooperation in areas such as trade, education, and technology. However, more efforts will be needed to completely resolve the tension associated with the Khalistan issue and the investigation into the Nijjar murder case.
