Dubai. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that Board Control Cricket India has corrected fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah by not handing over the command of the Indian Test team (Test Team). Ponting says that the problems of injury are pushing Bumrah back. Bumrah has been suffering from injury since 2022, due to which he returned in 2023 after 11 months.
After the return, Bumrah played a key role in India’s victory in T20 World Cup 2024 and some Test matches. However, Bumrah was again injured during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ponting expressed his opinion on Bumrah’s injury and said that the BCCI has corrected Bumrah by not giving him captaincy. After retiring from Rohit Sharma’s Test, Shubman Gill has been made the captain of the red ball format.
Ponting said in the ICC review, ‘I think this is the right step. I know that many people, cricket experts are saying that they do not understand why Bumrah was not chosen and why he has captained Shubman, but I think it is very simple. ‘ Ponting said that Bumrah’s injury would have affected his captaincy.
Ponting said, Bumrah’s injuries in the last few years have pushed him back a little and you do not want this with the captain. You cannot keep a captain who comes and misses the match here and there. So I think this is the right decision. Now that they have done this, they will have to stay on it and give them a chance to play for a long time.
