Nine days after the wedding, Raja and Sonam left for Meghalaya for honeymoon on 20 May. According to the police, Sonam planned to visit Shillong and made booking from tickets to hotels. The Meghalaya Police claims that this was the first step of the murder conspiracy. Both stayed at Balaji Guest House in Shillong on 21 May.
On 22 May, Raja and Sonam rented a scooty from Ketting Road in Shillong and left for Cherrapunji (Sohra). He reached Mavalakhyat village and landed 3000 stairs from there and went to see the double decker living route bridge of Nongriyat village. At night, he spent a homestay in Nongriyat. In CCTV footage, both were seen behaving normally.

On May 24, the owner of Scooty informed the police. After which the Meghalaya Police registered a case of missing couple. Raja and Sonam’s family reached Shillong. The search operation began with the help of police NDRF, SDRF, drone and local volunteers. Heavy rains and wild areas made the search difficult.
On June 2, the police drone saw the king’s mutilated body in a deep ditch near Weisavadong Waterfall. The body was identified with a “king” tattoo made on his right hand. The postmortem confirmed the death due to deep head injury and push. A blood -stained “Dao” (local weapon), a piece of mobile phone, smartwatch and Sonam’s white shirt were also found from the pass. This confirmed the investigation of the murder.
Sonam’s disappearance increased the suspicion of the police after the king’s body was found. On June 7, the statement of Guide Albert PD gave a new direction to the investigation. In which he talked about seeing the couple with three unknown men. CCTV footage and Scooty’s GPS data showed that there were other people along with the couple. The police started technical surveillance to trace Sonam’s location.
On the night of 8 June, Sonam made a video call to his brother Govind from Kashi Dhaba in Nandganj, Ghazipur. The dhaba owner informed the police, and Sonam was detained. The Meghalaya Police claims that he surrendered under pressure. Sonam told that she was “sick” but did not say where she was hidden. Police arrested Sonam’s lover Raj Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi.
According to the police, Sonam had an affair with Raj Kushwaha. Who was an accountant in his brother Gaurav Raghuvanshi’s company. Sonam hired Raj Kushwaha, Akash, Vishal and Anand to kill Raja. The three killers reached Shillong on 22 May and along with Sonam took the king to a deserted place. The king was thrown into the ditch and the king was attacked with “Dao” there. After the murder, all three fled to Guwahati while Sonam reached Ghazipur. Sonam’s father Devi Singh dismissed the police claims and said, “My daughter is innocent. She cannot do it. Meghalaya Police is lying.” He demanded a CBI inquiry and claimed that Sonam was kidnapped from Meghalaya. Raja’s brother Vipin also said, “Sonam did not surrender. We told the police his location.”
