Google Quad went down at midnight on June 12, after which services like Gmail, Spotify, Snapchat, and Discord also stopped working. The main reason for this outage was the problem with Google Cloud, which is the basis of many major digital services and apps. Due to this outage, Gmail, Spotify, Snapchat, Discord, and other services were interrupted.
Affected services: Google and third-party apps
Google's services were also not untouched by this. Services like Gmail, Google Search, Google Maps, and Nest either stopped working completely or became very slow. Apart from this, third-party apps based on Google infrastructure like Character.ai and Pokemon Trading Card Game also temporarily shut down.
Problem identification and fix
Google updated its cloud status dashboard twice at 12:41 am and 1:16 am that engineers have identified the problem and are working towards a solution, although performance was still affected in some areas, especially in the us-central1 zone.
Most services were restored, partial outage in one region.
By 6 am, Google announced that all services, including Vertex AI Online Prediction, were now working normally, however, the us-central1 region still saw a partial outage. "All impacted services are now working normally," Google said in its last update.
Google will conduct an internal investigation.
Google also said that it will conduct an internal investigation into the entire outage and will share its results publicly. The company thanked users around the world for their patience.
