UK Sees Sharp Rise In Student Visa Applications Despite Stricter Post-Study Rules

New data shows an unexpected trend: more students are still applying even though the UK government has tightened its requirements for international students.

The UK Home Office reported that between January and May 2025, 76,400 international students applied for study visas, a 29% increase over the same period the previous year. 18,500 applications were received nationwide in May alone, a 19% increase over May 2024.

Shortly after the UK implemented major immigration reforms, such as reducing the post-study work period under its Graduate Route from two years to 18 months, there was a surge in applications.

The figures show that students are still choosing the UK as a study destination in spite of the new regulations.

Changes in policy haven't decreased interest

However, the spike in interest indicates that early concerns about the government's immigration White Paper may have been unwarranted.

Students now have a more difficult and drawn-out journey if they wish to stay in the UK after completing their studies due to the new immigration regulations outlined in the White Paper.

The following are some of the main changes:

• Stricter English language tests, even for dependents;

• Increased skill requirements for work and study pathways to degree level;

• Double the time required for settlement from five to ten years;

• Students must also demonstrate progress in English while they are there.

Speaking at Downing Street last month, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the changes, arguing that they are essential for system control and fairness.

In the months ahead, the UK’s international education sector will be watching closely to see if interest holds steady or begins to drop as the new rules take full effect.
