Maharashtra Rains: Monsoon has turned active across Maharashtra, especially in the western region, bringing heavy rainfall, leading to increased water levels in dams. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the Pune to Kolhapur ghat areas for the next 24 hours. As per IMD, the region is likely to witness intense rainfall that may lead to landslides in some areas. In Pune district, the maximum temperature recorded over the past 24 hours was 32.4°C. The city witnessed 60 mm of rainfall, while Pimpri-Chinchwad also saw a similar amount of rain. While central Pune has seen intermittent showers, the ghat sections continue to receive persistent heavy rainfall.

Authorities have advised residents to stay alert, especially in landslide-prone areas. Emergency teams are on standby to handle any crisis that may arise due to the ongoing weather conditions. Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels in the Khadakwasla dam system, which supplies water to Pune city, have risen significantly. In the past 24 hours, Khadakwasla received 18 mm of rainfall, Panshet 25 mm, Varasgaon 26 mm, and Temghar 23 mm. The current water stock in the Khadakwasla project stands at 5.25 TMC, which is 1.35 TMC more than the same period last year.

A major attraction for tourists, the Bhushi Dam in Lonavala has started overflowing earlier than usual this year. Lonavala recorded 143 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. So far, the area has received 791 mm rain this monsoon, compared to just 303 mm during the same period last year — a difference of 488 mm.

The IMD has issued alerts for 22 districts in Maharashtra. While Ratnagiri is under Red Alert, Orange Alerts have been issued for Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Dhule, and Nandurbar. Mumbai, Nashik, Jalgaon, and Ahmednagar are under Yellow Alert. Several low-lying areas in Vasai-Virar have been waterlogged due to continuous rainfall since Sunday. Though Mumbai’s local trains are operating, delays of 5 to 10 minutes are reported across Central, Western, and Harbour lines. More light to moderate rain is expected over the coming days in Mumbai and nearby areas.
