World Music Day 2025 is being celebrated today across the world. This year, the theme is “Healing Through Harmony.” The purpose of this day is to spread a message of peace and love through the power of music.
World Music Day is observed every year on June 21. It is celebrated as a global festival of music. On this day, music is shared with the public for free. The aim is to make different forms of music easily available to everyone and promote musical diversity.
More than 120 countries take part in these celebrations. Musicians perform in public places like parks, streets, and community spaces without charging any fee. People gather to listen, enjoy, and even join in by playing instruments or singing along.
World Music Day was first celebrated in 1982. It was started by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang and music journalist Maurice Fleuret. They wanted to take music out of homes and bring it to the streets. Their goal was to let everyone enjoy music and to give musicians more recognition and connection with the public.
In South Asia, music has always held a special place. Alongside classical music, genres like ghazals, folk songs, film music, and pop are widely loved. Music is often considered food for the soul. Great artists like Amir Khusrow, Tansen, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Nazia Hassan helped raise the status of music in the region.
The 2025 theme “Healing Through Harmony” puts focus on the emotional and psychological benefits of music. It reminds us that music can calm the mind, ease stress, and build a sense of unity among people. It is more than entertainment — it’s a universal language that brings healing and connection.
