In a remarkable turn of events, Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has regained his position as the world's top-ranked athlete in men's javelin throw, overtaking Grenada's Anderson Peters. This update was reflected in the latest rankings released by World Athletics, which now credits Neeraj with 1,445 points, while Peters has 1,431 points. Notably, Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is currently ranked fourth with 1,370 points.
The rankings also feature Germany's Julian Weber in third place, who achieved a remarkable throw of 91.06 meters at the Doha Diamond League, and Czechia's Jakub Vadlejch, the silver medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, in fifth place.
The year 2025 has proven to be exceptional for Neeraj. He began the year with a victory at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April. Following this, he achieved a historic second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League, marking his first-ever throw beyond the 90-meter mark with a distance of 90.23 meters. Additionally, he secured a second-place finish at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland and continued his winning streak with titles at the Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike, with throws of 88.16 meters and 85.29 meters, respectively.
Neeraj has consistently outperformed Anderson Peters in all four of their encounters this year, reinforcing his dominance over the Grenadian athlete. The last time Neeraj finished behind Peters was during the 2022 World Athletics Championships, where he earned a silver medal with a throw of 88.39 meters, while Peters achieved a throw of 89.91 meters. Overall, Neeraj leads Peters 16-5 in major javelin throw finals. Both athletes are set to compete again at the Neeraj Chopra Classic event in Bengaluru on July 5.
