Mansour/ Morning Edition/ The Baltimore Orioles stormed back from a six-run deficit to crush the Tampa Bay Rays 22-8 in a record-breaking offensive explosion. Gunnar Henderson and Gary Sánchez starred with four hits each as Baltimore notched 14 extra-base hits. It marked the first time in MLB history a team won by 14 after trailing by six.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles proved no deficit is safe — especially against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Just nine days after squandering an 8-0 lead in a loss to Tampa Bay, the Orioles flipped the script in spectacular fashion on Friday night. Trailing 6-0 in the second inning, Baltimore exploded for a record-setting offensive barrage, ultimately hammering the Rays 22-8 at Camden Yards.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Baltimore became the first team in either league’s history to win a game by at least 14 runs after trailing by six.
Under steady drizzle, the Orioles unleashed 21 hits, including 14 extra-base hits — a franchise record since the team’s move to Baltimore in 1954. Gunnar Henderson and Gary Sánchez each delivered four hits and a home run. Colton Cowser doubled three times and, along with Ramón Laureano, crossed the plate four times.
The spark came from rookie Coby Mayo, who launched the comeback with a two-run double in the second. By the eighth inning, Baltimore led 20-8, and Tampa Bay resorted to using infielder José Caballero on the mound. Mayo crushed a pitch from Caballero for his first career homer, capping the Orioles’ outburst.
The Orioles’ stunning turnaround came just days after they’d struggled offensively, having been no-hit into the seventh inning in three of their previous five games. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay had allowed just one run total in a three-game sweep of Kansas City before arriving in Baltimore.
Friday’s slugfest was reminiscent of 2023, when the Rays and Yankees traded comebacks of six runs or more within a single week. But Baltimore’s emphatic 22-8 victory, after spotting Tampa Bay a six-run head start, carved out its own historic place in baseball lore.
