Without star power, this film created a ruckus abroad, defeated Shah Rukh and Aamir’s earnings

This started the phase of huge earnings abroad

The songs of this film were Kamal, they are heard even today. Finally, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal were able to earn further …

The matter is from the 90s. Since that time, Shah Rukh Khan has been the face of Indian cinema abroad. His films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, My Name Is Khan and Jawan have played a lot in America and Europe. Some have earned more than the local films there. Similarly, Aamir Khan has made a strong hold in China. But in 2001, an independent film with a budget of just Rs 5 crore and a big star without a big star also overtook the biggest hit films of these two superstars.

In 2000, screen writer Sabrina Dhawan wrote a script based on an Indian family in Delhi during an MFA film program at Columbia University. This screenplay was liked by the film direction Meera Nair. When Meera made it, the film was known as Monsoon Wedding. The film was made together by companies from India, America, Italy, France and Germany. Its budget was just $ 1.2 million (at that time about 5.5 crore rupees). It consisted of theater and TV artists like Naseeruddin Shah, Lillet Dubey, Parveen Dabas, Vijay Raj, Shefali Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Soni Razdan, Roshan Seth and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Apart from this, three new actors Vasudhara Das, Randeep Hooda and Ram Kapoor were also in this film.

The film did not expect much earning at the box office, but the monsoon wedding left behind all expectations. The film was a huge hit in North America, where it grossed more than $ 13 million (about 58 crores) and it remained the record for the highest grossing of any Indian film in America-Canada for years, which was broken by Bahubali in 2017.

The monsoon wedding earned worldwide $ 30.8 million (about Rs 145 crore), with the highest grossing from North America and Europe. It achieved the tag of the highest grossing Indian film abroad, which remained with it for 15 years. Eventually, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal left it behind.

When the monsoon wedding was released in 2001, Shah Rukh Khan was at the peak of his career. That year he had two films – Ashoka and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum. Both films were successful abroad, but both of them also earned abroad, only $ 14 million (about 60 crores), which was less than the monsoon wedding. Even Aamir Khan’s rent, which was released the same year and went to the Oscar, also earned just $ 3 million (about 13 crore rupees) abroad.

In this way, without any big star and low -budget monsoon wedding, Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan’s hits also overtaken the foreign earnings of hit films and showed a new direction of Indian cinema to the world.
