New Delhi, July 3: An Air India flight, designated AI 103, traveling from Delhi to Washington, D.C., was cancelled following a technical issue encountered during a fuel stop in Vienna, as confirmed by the airline on Thursday.

The flight, which departed at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, was expected to arrive in Washington at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday but was cancelled in Vienna.

As a result, the return flight AI 104 from Washington, D.C. to Delhi, which also included a stop in Vienna, was cancelled.

In a statement, the airline mentioned that passengers affected by this cancellation have been rebooked on alternative flights to Delhi or have been offered full refunds according to their preferences.

“Flight AI 103 from Delhi to Washington, D.C. on July 2, 2025, made a scheduled fuel stop in Vienna. During routine checks, an extended maintenance issue was identified that needed to be addressed before the next flight, requiring additional time,” explained an Air India representative.

Due to this situation, the leg from Vienna to Washington, D.C. was cancelled, and passengers were disembarked.

“Passengers eligible for visa-free entry or those holding valid Schengen visas were provided with hotel accommodations in Vienna until the next available flight. For those without entry permissions, arrangements are being made pending immigration and security clearances from Austrian authorities,” the airline added.

The airline expressed its regret for the inconvenience caused and emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew members.

Recently, there have been multiple cancellations of Air India flights due to technical difficulties.

For instance, flight AI 357, which was traveling from Japan to Delhi, had to make a precautionary diversion to Kolkata due to persistent warm temperatures in the cabin. The Boeing 787 aircraft landed safely and is currently undergoing inspection, according to the airline.

This flight was on its way from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to New Delhi when the crew reported the technical issue.

Additionally, on June 27, Air India flight AI 639 from Mumbai to Chennai had to return to Mumbai shortly after takeoff due to the crew detecting a burning smell inside the cabin.

Air India and Air India Express operate over 1,100 flights daily, serving more than 150,000 passengers.
