He wasn’t a star in the conventional sense — but his presence lit up the screen with quiet power. A.K. Hangal a name synonymous with depth and dignity made his film debut at the age of 52 in Teesri Kasam (1966). What followed was a prolific career spanning over 200 films an achievement by any measure. From playing Rahim Chacha in Sholay to heartfelt roles in Namak Haraam Abhimaan Lagaan and Shaukeen Hangal carved a space few could match — embodying moral integrity warmth and pain all at once. The quiet constant in the era of superstars He wasn’t the hero but he shared the frame with many. Hangal appeared in some of Amitabh Bachchan’s most impactful films including Sholay Abhimaan and Namak Haraam. Their screen chemistry in the 1970s and ’80s added emotional weight to already powerful stories. He was also a familiar face in Rajesh Khanna’s films — appearing in titles like Aap Ki Kasam Amar Deep Phir Wohi Raat Thodisi Bewafaii and Naukri where he often played the conscience of the story. A Padma Bhushan… and a plea for help In 2006 Hangal was honoured with the Padma Bhushan India’s third-highest civilian award for his contribution to theatre and cinema. But the honour did little to shield him from real-life hardship. In his later years the actor was reportedly living in a small one-room flat in Mumbai. His son made an emotional appeal through the media revealing that the veteran had little money for even basic medicines despite a lifetime of contribution to Indian cinema. His monthly medical expenses alone ran into INR 6000–8000 a burden he could barely afford. A final curtain call A.K. Hangal passed away in August 2012 at the age of 98 following a brief illness. His death marked the end of a journey that was as tragic as it was inspiring — a reminder of how even the most beloved faces on screen can fade into financial struggle.
