In a recent interview with The Lallantop Kajol reflected on one of the most bitter box office showdowns Bollywood has seen — the 2012 Diwali clash between Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar and YRF’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan. For Kajol the drama wasn’t just professional — it was deeply personal.
Fights are always difficult especially when they remain unresolved for some time she said recalling the emotional toll. At that point when you have a situation like that in front of you both parties were standing for themselves.
Between a husband and a friend
Kajol’s dilemma stemmed from her unique position — married to Ajay Devgn who co-produced SOS and a long-time close friend of Aditya Chopra head of YRF.
As somebody who was connected to both sides I felt helpless. You have to wait for time to pass so that the feelings subside. So that things can become ok again.
She added a philosophical note: Change is change it is neither good nor bad. It is written somewhere that change is eternal. It is the only thing which is constant.
The Rs 100 crore Diwali duel
Back in 2012 both films were slated for release on November 13 sparking a high-stakes Diwali weekend face-off. Devgn’s production company filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) alleging that YRF leveraged its dominance to monopolise screen space for Jab Tak Hai Jaan which was also the late Yash Chopra’s final directorial.
Despite the controversy and media frenzy the CCI dismissed Devgn’s complaint stating it lacked legal merit. Financially both films performed well — JTHJ earned over INR 120 crore while SOS grossed around INR 105 crore at the domestic box office.
Kajols professional front
Fresh off her performance in Maa a mythological horror directed by Vishal Furia and co-produced by Ajay Devgn Kajol is now set to appear in Sarzameen an action-thriller co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Ibrahim Ali Khan. The film is slated to stream from July 25.
