Both seasons of the series Marie Antoinette are available to watch on BBC iPlayer - and the "addictive" period drama has been getting stellar reviews as fans are hoping for a third season about the French queen and the twisted ongoings at the Palace of Versailles to drop.
Marie, who was, of course, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution, is played by 32-year-old Russian-born German-raised actress Emilia Schüle. The drama is a combination of Channel 4's The Great but set in France, and the hit Netflix series Bridgerton. It was written by Deborah Davis, who won acclaim for The Favourite.
In the first series, Marie emerges as a force to be reckoned with in the royal court of Versaille after rising from a teenage bride to the Queen of France after her husband became King Louis XVI (played by Louis Cunningham).
She completes her duty of providing a male heir and wins the hearts of the nation in the first series - but powerful enemies emerge in the second outing of the BBC drama who want to ruin her reputation.
With taxes on the rise and Marie becoming more out of touch with the poverty and suffering away from Versailles, her days as monarch are numbered as we know from the history books.
The opulent series has been highly praised by viewers who have found themselves encapsulated by the grand costumes and wigs as well as the seductive plotlines on the themes of betrayal and romance.
One said on Rotten Tomatoes: "Love this series, we see the emotions of the characters and it's beautiful." Another wrote: "This is where I escape to when it all gets too much. I love the show's rich sumptuosity and Emilia Schüle and the rest of the cast are really very good."
A third penned: "This show is incredible. I'm really not sure why the critics didn't give it good reviews. Probably because they didn't infuse it with modern-day values; rather, they kept it as an accurate period piece. I much prefer it this way, how it actually was."
Someone else posted a rave review of the series, which has eight episodes in both seasons, describing it as a "breath of fresh air."
Another, who rated it nine out of 10 and called it "addictive", added: "Period dramas aren't usually our thing, but we loved this series. It's interesting at the beginning, but it gets so good as it goes on, and the characters age up.
"The sets were impressive - they just kept going and going during some of the longer tracking shots. The way the show is filmed is really effective."
Marie Antoinette seasons one and two can be watched on BBC iPlayer.
