Oscar Piastri failed to mention winning team-mate Lando Norris in a bitter interview after receiving a 10-second penalty during the British Grand Prix. Nico Hulkenberg's first-ever podium finish was the race 'highlight', according to Piastri, despite his McLaren colleague winning his home race for the first time.

An excellent start gave the championship leader a strong advantage over pole-leader Max Verstappen. He led under a safety car, which eventually headed for the pit lane on lap 21. Piastri braked suddenly, forcing Verstappen to take drastic action to avoid a collision. "Woah, mate. He just suddenly again slows down!" the Dutchman fumed over the Red Bull radio. Piastri believed he had braked fairly and later told Hulkenberg in the cool-down room that it was "coincidence" that he had braked as the safety car's lights went out. He was slapped with a 10-second penalty, which hindered his race, and ultimately finished second.

However, Piastri made no mention of his delighted team-mate afterwards and made a point to congratulate Hulkenberg instead, telling interviewer Jenson Button: "I'm not going to say much, I'll get myself in trouble. Well done to Nico, I think that's the highlight of the day. I'll leave it there."

Pressed further by Button on the penalty that cost him his victory, the Australian added: "Apparently you can't brake behind the safety car anymore. I did it for five laps before that. I'm not going to say too much because I'll get myself in trouble. Thanks to the crowd for a great event, thanks for sticking through the weather. I still like Silverstone, even if I don't like it today."

Footage from global broadcasters shows that Piastri congratulated Norris when they first climbed out of their cars. McLaren will hope that the runner-up's interview was a minor blip, with frustration aimed at the FIA rather than Piastri's team-mate.

Speaking later to Sky Sports, Piastri said of his team: "The team did a great job, they had a great car. On my side of the garage, we did everything we needed to. It's a good lot of points for the team. I'm very proud of the whole team, we had an absolute rocketship of a car today. With all the safety cars that got thrown at us, to win my such a big margin is impressive."

McLaren had given both drivers liberty to race each other over the final five laps, although Piastri was warned that the gap was likely too big to catch Norris. The popular Hulkenberg managed to fend off Lewis Hamilton to claim his first top-three finish in 239 races.

Hulkenberg emerged onto the podium to chants of 'Nico! Nico! Nico!" from not only Sauber colleagues, but also the hundreds of thousands in the crowd at Silverstone.

Wild weather that deluged much of the UK on Sunday afternoon meant that drivers started the formation lap under a safety car. It turned out to be an excellent day for McLaren, with their drivers now holding a huge advantage in the Drivers' Championship going into the summer break.
