In Bihar, political mercury is going up before the assembly elections. Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) process of the ongoing voter list in the state. RJD MP Manoj Jha has challenged this move of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the Supreme Court. RJD alleges that this exercise is being unilateral and only by targeting Bihar.
It is noteworthy that the Election Commission had issued SIR orders in Bihar on 24 June, which aims to review about eight crore voters by July 25. The Commission says that this practice is being done “smoothly at the ground level” without any change. But the opposition parties are looking at this with suspicion.
Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has raised the question that when this rule was implemented in the whole country in 2003, then why is only Bihar being targeted? He called it a unilateral action. At the same time, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticized this process and described it as a conspiracy to snatch the franchise of Dalits and the underprivileged “.
Document is exempted to submit later
Explaining the situation, the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar wrote on social media that this process is being completely done as per the instructions of the Election Commission. He informed that the draft voter list to be released on August 1 will include the names of all the existing voters who have submitted the calculation form. Even in the event of a document, voters have been allowed to submit the documents with the form later.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has also moved the Supreme Court in this case. He alleged that after Bihar, the Election Commission can now target West Bengal. Moitra said that this process is a conspiracy to deprive the youth of voting rights.
