In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood the on-screen pairing of celebrities is hailed and idolised as if they are real. But can you imagine an actress who is playing the role of an actor lover in one film portraying the role of the same hero in another film? Yes this may sound odd and uncanny but back in the golden era several leading actresses transitioned from love interest to maternal figures for the very same actor. Whether its for the compelling storyline or impeccable performances of these actresses this transition was perceived very well by the audience that it didnt even raise an eyebrow. One very famous example of this is Nargis and Sunil Dutt. The duo was a real-life couple but whats interesting is that their love story blossomed on the sets of Mother India (1957) where Nargis portrayed the role of Sunil Dutts mother. During the shoot of this film the duo tied the knot but they kept it a hush-hush until the release of the film. Later they were seen as a romantic couple in the film Yaadien. Another leading actress who played the love interest and the role of maternal unit of Amitabh Bachchan was Rakhee Gulzar. She played Amitabh Bachchan’s love interest in films like Kabhi Kabhie Trishul Kasme Vaade and Barsaat Ki Ek Raat and in the film Shakti she portrayed the role of his mother. This further cemented her versatility as an actor. Waheeda Rehman a fine actor of her time also followed a similar path. She played Amitabh Bachchans love interest in Kabhi Kabhie. But in Trishul and Coolie she convincingly played his mother. Sharmila Tagore also played these dual roles for the same hero. In Faraar (1975) she played his wife while later in Desh Premi she appeared as his mother. However the most surprising casting was of Moondru Mudichu where 13 year 13-year-old Sridevi played the role of Rajinikanth’s stepmother and later she went on to become a lead actress opposite him. These stories exude the versatility of actresses of that time.
