Cameron Norrie's fairytale Wimbledon run, umpire controversy and Emma Raducanu question

Cameron Norrie will be aiming to secure the biggestWimbledonscalp of his tournament so far on Tuesday. The British number three will take on reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter finals after making it to the second week in SW19.

Norrie, 29, is the final home grown representative left in the men’s singles tournament. And having never secured a Grand Slam title, he will be hoping the home crowd will be behind him to secure an incredible upset.

Norrie reached the Wimbledon semi-finals back in 2022 but fell to Novak Djokovic despite claiming the first set against the Serbian powerhouse. At that point, Norrie was firmly entrenched in the world's top 10, reaching as high as eighth.

Since then however, there has been a gradual slide down the rankings, entering Wimbledon 61st in the world before his run to the last eight. So let's take a look at his run so far - with a fair bit of controversy - as he attempts to dethrone the champion and seemingly all-conquering Alcaraz.

How has he done so far?

Norrie has managed to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for just the second time in his career. He beat Spaniard Roberto Bautista in the first round in an entertaining affair, before recovering from a poor start to upset 12th seed Frances Tiafoe to reach the third round.

Things were slightly more straight-forward against his next opponent Mattia Bellucci as Norrie dismissed the Italian in straight sets. But things then took a while against Nicolas Jarry on Sunday.

Norrie looked as though he had a straight-forward win in his hands having gone up 2-0 in sets, but the Chilean then roared back to take the following two. It took a final set decider from Norrie to seal his win and tee-up an eventual showdown with favourite Alcaraz.

Have there been any hiccups?

Actually, yes. There was some controversy during his clash with Jarry, with the Chilean particularly irritated by Norrie’s long ball-bouncing ahead of his serve. And he aired his complaints to umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore during a break in play.

"What is the rule there? The problem is, is it normal to do that when it affects the other player?," Jarry asked.

"You have to intervene there or I have to suck it. That's the real issue, it doesn't matter the reason. It is the same as hitting the ball anywhere.

"It's not intentional but you have to apply the code as well. How is it now? He perfectly can stop doing it, it's not a nervous tick. It's something that he can control. It's not a nervous tick. You think there's nothing I can do so I just have to suck it up, because he does it always.

"That's a reason for me to have to play with something that affects me. It can be changed, it's not something that cannot be changed." Asderaki-Moore then responded, saying: "I am going to step in if I think there is a reason to step in."

But Jarry wasn't done and continued: "I don't want to force you into anything. I just want to do what the rules say. And if there is not a rule then tell me and I cannot do anything about it."

"The rule is if it's intentional that he is disturbing then I can do something about it," Aderaki-Moore replied.

Walking back onto the court, Jarry said in conclusion: "Ok so it has to be intentional, if it's not intentional then there's nothing I can do. If that's the rule then I don't need you to say something. I just want to play by the rules because it affects me."

What about Emma Raducanu?

There was even more confusion following his round of 16 tie with Bellucci. During his post-match press conference, Norrie was asked if he was datingfellow Brit Emma Raducanu to which he replied: "Sorry?" with a baffled look across his face.

The reporter asked his question again, saying: "We're trying to find out who is dating Emma Raducanu. It seems to be going round all the men's singles. I was just wondering if you are dating her, please?"

With a confused look on his face, Norrie replied: "I'm not, no. You can ask her, though. You can ask her. I don't know," before he swiftly turned away.
