Alappuzha: In a heartwarming incident that surprised even the police, a 65-year-old woman from Alappuzha chose compassion over punishment when her grandson stole her gold necklace and later returned it.
The woman, who removes her one-and-a-half sovereign gold necklace every night before bed and places it under her pillow, discovered it missing when she woke up last Thursday. Her immediate suspicion fell on her grandson, who had previously taken small sums of money from the house unnoticed. However, rather than report him, she appealed to the police for help, asking them not to file a case, but simply to recover her precious ornament. The necklace, which held not only financial but emotional value as her sole savings, was something she desperately wanted back. Filing a police complaint, she believed, would delay its return and potentially land her grandson in jail-something she couldn't bear. Understanding her concerns, the police took a different approach. They shared the young man's photograph with Aby Thomas, district secretary of the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants' Association. He circulated the image in a WhatsApp group of jewellery store owners, advising them not to purchase any such item from the individual. That strategy worked. The young man, desperate to sell the necklace, visited nearly 25 jewellery shops across the district but was turned away at each one. Even attempts to sell a cut piece of the chain failed. Realising he had no way out, he returned the necklace to his grandmother on Saturday-three days after the theft-and admitted his mistake. To everyone's surprise, the grandmother not only forgave him but gave him Rs 1,000 as a token gesture. She was heartbroken but hopeful. Despite the betrayal, her affection for her grandson remained intact. The boy had once been a top student, scoring A+ in all subjects in his Class 12 exams. But after moving to Bengaluru to study fashion designing, things changed. With separated parents and emotional struggles, he seemed to have lost his way. The grandmother believes he still has the potential to turn his life around and is determined to help him do so.
