There is nothing better than feasting on a bowl of freshly picked British berries on a hot summer day. Although strawberries may be all the rage during Wimbledon, blueberries are the choice of many gardeners across the country.

The small and sweet fruit can be very soft and require some very specific care, which is sure to pay off during harvest time. At their peak, they are known for how delicously sweet they can be, and with a wide choice of varieties able to be grown across the UK, they are found in many of the country's gardens. However, the berry can take a lot of maintenance, and if you want them to be large and bursting with juice, they'll need to be fed.

Blueberry plants, like most other soft fruits, require a balance of key nutrients to support their growth.

But before you head out to the garden centre to fork out on some expensive plant food, you may have a kitchen scrap destined for the bin that can do just as good a job.

Gardening enthusiasts claim that adding used coffee grounds to your blueberry bush soil helps improve their growth, overall health, and makes them sweeter than ever when it comes to harvest.

What many coffee drinkers throw away every morning, blueberry bushes actually love. The ground can derive tons of essential nutrients as well as acting as a fertiliser to give the the plant a boost.

The experts at BackyardBoss said: "Not only is it an easy way to recycle your coffee waste, but it's also an effective natural fertiliser.

"Adding coffee grounds to your blueberry bushes is a great way to ensure they stay healthier and produce better fruit.

Coffee grounds are full of essential nutrients, including potassium, carbon, and nitrogen, that help promote vigorous growth, more leaves, and "more delicious berries".

Coffee grounds themselves are acidic with a low pH, and blueberries thrive in acidic soil, allowing the plant to stay healthy and keep producing fruit.

Another benefit of using grounds is they can as as a natural pesticide to ward off rats, slugs, snails and more.

To add them to your plant simply spread them direclty onto the soil with a little bit of water, or add them to some compost and mix into the soil.

Although anybody looking to use coffee grounds should make sure they have been used as fresh grounds are too acidic and also store caffeine that can have some negative effects on the plants.
