New Delhi: Indian archers Rishabh Yadav and Jyothi Surekha Vennam scripted history in the ongoing Archery World Cup in Madrid by setting a new world record in the mixed team compound event.
Their strong show helped India grab the top seedings in both individual and team events at the fourth and final stage of the World Cup in the Spanish capital.
Yadav, who won a bronze medal in the World Cup’s Shanghai leg in May, propelled India to the top of the men’s team rankings with a total of 2135 points, ahead of Turkey (2127) and South Korea (2124).
While 22-year-old Yadav clinched the top spot in the men’s compound qualifying round with a score of 716 points, reigning Asian Games champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam claimed the top podium spot in the women’s compound section with a score of 715 points.
Yadav was the leader of the 85-athlete field from start to finish but narrowly missed out on breaking Braden Gellenthien’s individual world record of 718 at 30 arrows, despite opening with a perfect 300.
Priyansh (710) and comeback man Aman Saini (709) were the next best Indians, finishing 10th and 11th overall, respectively.
Yadav and Jyothi shot a combined 1431 to overhaul the previous mixed team world record of 1429, set by the Denmark duo of Gellenthien and Mathias Fullerton at the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 European Games.

The record-breaking effort also helped Yadav record his best-ever 72-arrow qualifying score in a World Cup. Yadav, who is only in his second season on the international circuit, has already qualified for the Indian team heading to the World Archery Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, later this year.
